Central Texas Pipe Burst Season: Why Winter Freezes Cause Major Water Damage

Central Texas homeowners often underestimate the risk of frozen pipes because the region enjoys a generally mild climate. But when Arctic fronts push south into Bell and McLennan Counties, temperatures can plummet into the teens or single digits virtually overnight. These sudden, severe freezes catch plumbing systems off guard, especially in homes built without the heavy insulation common in northern states. The result is burst pipes that can release hundreds of gallons of water per hour into walls, ceilings, and floors before homeowners even realize there is a problem.

The physics behind pipe bursts are straightforward but devastating. When water freezes inside a pipe, it expands by approximately nine percent. This expansion creates enormous pressure, up to 2,000 pounds per square inch, between the ice blockage and the closed faucet downstream. It is not the ice itself that bursts the pipe but rather this trapped pressure. Copper, PVC, and PEX pipes are all vulnerable, though PEX has slightly more flexibility. The most at-risk pipes in Central Texas homes are those in uninsulated attics, exterior walls, garages, and crawl spaces where temperatures can drop well below the 20-degree threshold for freezing.

Bell County and McLennan County have experienced several significant freeze events in recent years that caused widespread pipe burst damage. The most notable was Winter Storm Uri in February 2021, which brought sustained temperatures below 10 degrees for multiple days and caused an estimated 15 billion dollars in water damage statewide. The Killeen-Temple-Waco corridor was hit especially hard because many homes in the region were built in the 1970s through 1990s with minimal pipe insulation. Neighborhoods in South Temple, Central Killeen, and East Waco saw some of the highest concentrations of burst pipe claims.

Prevention starts before the freeze arrives. Insulate all exposed pipes in attics, garages, and crawl spaces with foam pipe sleeves or heat tape. Know where your main water shutoff valve is located and test it annually to ensure it functions properly. During freeze warnings, open cabinet doors under kitchen and bathroom sinks to allow warm air to circulate around pipes. Let faucets at the end of long pipe runs drip slowly to maintain water movement. If you plan to leave your home during a freeze, never set your thermostat below 55 degrees and consider shutting off the main water supply and draining the system.

If a pipe does burst, every minute counts. Immediately shut off the main water supply to stop the flow. Then shut off electricity to any affected areas to prevent electrical hazards. Do not attempt to thaw frozen pipes with an open flame or heat gun, as the rapid temperature change can cause additional bursts. Call a licensed plumber to repair the pipe and a professional restoration company to begin water extraction and drying. The goal is to remove standing water and begin structural drying within the first few hours to prevent secondary damage.

Insurance coverage for pipe bursts in Central Texas is generally favorable but comes with important caveats. Most homeowner policies cover sudden and accidental pipe bursts and the resulting water damage. However, insurers may deny claims if they determine the burst resulted from lack of maintenance, such as failing to insulate known vulnerable pipes or leaving a home unheated during a freeze. Document your prevention efforts with photos and receipts for insulation materials, and keep your thermostat at a reasonable temperature to maintain your coverage.
